Accomplishments

In February Jackie Carlson, Mary Eichen and June Kuhns delivered about 50 quilts made by the Piece Corp quilters to St. Mark Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. St. Mark Lutheran in Jacksonville is the regional collection sight for all items going to Lutheran World Relief. From there they are shipped to the LWR warehouse in Maryland to distribution worldwide.

In February The Prayer Shawl Ministry was started. There are 4 ladies knitting and crocheting shawls at present. There is no charge for the shawls and they are available to everyone to give to family and friends as they see the need. Shawls are also donated to 2 hospices and a nursing home. 27 shawls have been made and given away this year. The cost of the yarn is paid for from the W/ELCA treasury and by donations from the congregation of yarn or money. The Prayer Shawl makers work at home, knitting and crocheting. We meet as a group the last Tuesday of each month at 11:30am

The Bazaar/Rummage sale was held on March 14. We made over $2,500 plus raised $1,300 in matching funds from Thrivent for the church. We purchased 16 new tables for the fellowship hall, eight 8 ft and eight 6 ft. tables at a cost of about $1,200.

On March 26, 6 women represented St. Mark by the Sea at the Flagler-Volusia Conference of the W/ELCA Spring Gathering at All Saints Lutheran in Port Orange.

The Mother Daughter Luncheon was held on May 2 with a great turnout. We were entertained by members of our church, Angela DeZego, Carol Fabbrini and Dorothy Gordon.

In May and through the summer we asked the congregation with their help in collecting school supplies to fill school bags for Lutheran World Relief. They will be delivered in February 2010 along with the quilts.

October 24th we held our annual Fashion Show and had over 100 women in attendance. Margo Sedgley and Nellie Brawn co-chaired the event and did a great job. Fashions from Patchington’s in Ormond Beach were modeled. Mary Eichen represented St. Mark by the Sea W/ELCA at the annual Fall Gathering of the Florida/Bahama Synod W/ELCA the weekend of November 13, 14 and 15 at Lake Yale Conference center in Leesburg.

December 5the we hosted our annual Christmas Tea with 45 women attending. A delicious assortment of food was served. Entertainment provided by the Sunshine Tappers and a sing along lead by Betty Hostler and Dee Lee, playing duets on the piano was enjoyed by all.

At the business meeting prior to the Tea election for the office of president and secretary was held. June Kuhns was reelected as President and Nellie Brawn was reelected as Secretary. we announced that we have donated $1,400 to charity and $1,400 put aside for the church, plus the $1,200 purchase of the tables.

Items that have been purchased from the church fund are the new liturgy books for the alter and organist, a floor buffer, started Pastor’s Pantry and purchased gas cards to have in the office to give to people who are passing through town who are in need of food and gas money.

Charities W/ELCA donated to in 2009 are: Lutheran World Relief, Salvation Army, Family life Center of Flagler (Women’s Abuse Center), Operation Christmas Child, Deland’s Lutheran Retirement Home, Jewish Federation-school supply kits, Flagler County Education Foundation S.T.U.F.F. Bus, Flagler County Chamber of Commerce-Feed Flagler, Flagler County Family Assistance Center Inc. - Cold Weather Shelter, Ronald McDonald House - Orlando and the Hope Network of Flagler County Inc.

The Executive board of W/ELCA meets several times before each activity to plan the upcoming event. All the women of the church are invited to attend all meetings.

The Piece Corp Quilters meet each Wednesday morning from 9 -12 noon in the fellowship hall to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief and other charities. Kids and baby quilts were made this fall and donated to the Family Life Center for Abused Women and to the S.T.U.F.F. Bus. Crafts are also made for the March Bazaar.

You are invited to join us each Wednesday. You donrsquo;t need to be quilter or a crafty person. There are always projects and opportunities available for everyone. And we always stop mid morning for coffee and treats!!

Silk flower arrangements are available for sale through the year. Quilts are available for sale at the Bazaar and specialty quilts are made throughout the year and raffled off at events. This year quilts were raffled at the March Bazaar, the Fall Fashion show and before Christmas.

All the money earned through the year goes back to the church and community except for a small amount left in the treasury for incidental expenses.
